One of the progressive features of Toyota’s latest LandCruiser 70 has been the gradual modernising of its exterior design. Each new model has been quietly refining itself and becoming more and more elegant.

You’ll find that the appearance of a new Toyota LandCruiser 70 is a perfect blend of rugged beauty. The bodywork is wider to accommodate the bigger engine and the wider track. Protruding front fenders, a big front bumper and a pleasant grille design and headlamps make for quite a charming appearance. You’ll notice the sporty bonnet scoop, too. Over fender flares set the GX and GXL models apart. Fog lamps and chrome detailing, along with steel or aluminium side steps look awesome on the GXL model.

Inside, you have everything you need, and then some – depending on the model of choice. Pleasing dash design, and switchgear positioning, make travelling in a LandCruiser 70 very special. And there’s a good sound system, the best having a CD player, MP3 compatibility, iPod, MP3 player, a USB input and Bluetooth capabilities. The head unit in the Cab Chassis and 11 seater Troop Carrier is connected to two speakers, while there are four speakers in the Wagon and five-seater Troop Carrier.

The Troop Carrier versions have massive interior space and can be kitted out to carry up to eleven people. This would be a great choice for all you adventure tour people, and the like. This leaves the very comfortable Land Cruiser 70 Wagons that will be highly appealing to the family.

What runs sweetly under the bonnet of all models is the very powerful 4.5 litre V8 turbo-diesel engine that boasts a variable vane turbocharger with an intercooler. The engine has DOHC technology and 32 valves with common-rail direct injection. Never short of grunt, the 151 kW power output is always ready to haul you through the toughest terrain, and with a class-leading 430 Nm of torque low down power is sensational. Very appropriately geared, you’ll find the five-speed manual transmission with High/Low range a joy to use. An amazing minimum of 1500 km fuel range for vehicles fitted with 180 litre tanks (Cab Chassis and Troop Carrier) provides bolstered outback travel.

To make the work grind easy, a stereo system that includes a CD player and MP3 compatibility comes as standard on all versions. There are two speakers in the Cab Chassis and the eleven-seater Troop Carrier, while four-speakers are part of the comfortable Land Cruiser 70 Wagon and 5-seater Troop Carrier package.

Underway, the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 offers a superb driving position that is high and comfortable. The simple dash design is very functional and the heater switches, indicators, gear lever and steering wheel function together in an ergonomically well laid out manner. The four wheel disc brakes offer very good braking response, and bring the 4×4 to a halt in a level, no-fuss fashion. Superbly built, the Toyota Land Cruiser rides over rough terrain in a solid and comfortable manner – thanks to the tough 4×4 chassis design. You always feel safe behind the wheel as the vehicle sits so well on the road, and on rough terrain. Driving a Land Cruiser 70 is an awesome way to get around for the adventurous at heart.

Even in the eleven-seat Troop Carrier, all seat positions get seatbelts. CRS (Child Restraint System) upper tether anchors are included on the four-door Wagon, so fitting child seats is a breeze. Front occupants are fitted with Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts.
