We’re off to Australia Zoo for the start of an epic school holiday adventure. Got the three scallywags ready; my stunning wife is ready; and yep we sure have the entire luggage! Some cars take an effort to squeeze all the holiday items into, but there is one such car that has a big boot and loads of interior room. The comforts are there for the long haul, and the power and handling are all part and parcel of the wonderful new BMW 730d sedan experience.
Like a crocodile ready to pounce, the BMW 730d is a stealth performer. Acceleration is smooth and punchy, and there always seems to be more power in reserve when really needed. The BMW 730d has a 0-100 km/h time of 7.2 seconds. With a 180 kW 3.0 litre diesel engine, and a colossal 540 Nm of torque, you can see why a loaded up BMW 730d has no trouble hauling the load. There are very few utes that could boast the same level of pure grunt. With a 7.2 litres/100 km average fuel economy figure, travel need not cost the earth.
Open up the boot, and the huge carrying capacity is superb. Fully loaded and with all the leather seats occupied, the BMW’s superlative suspension remains strong and firmly in control. Cornering at around the 60 km/h mark, the rear wheels start to turn ever-so-slightly in the opposite direction to the front wheels, which is part of BMW’s Integral Active Steering system. The level of control this feature gives in high speed cornering is quite outstanding, and sets the new seven series head and shoulders above its competitors as a true luxury driver’s car.
Inside the lavish leather interior, there are so many everyday comforts to make your journey, city to city, one that remains relaxing and enjoyable. Climate control, a 10.2 inch display screen for all the entertainment and navigation controls, BMW’s optional night vision which can detect humans 100 metres away in the darkness, wood veneer trim, head-up display functions (information in the front windscreen glass), iDrive – everything you need at your fingertips, and a premium surround sound audio system all work to make the journey a memorable one. There is so much space for the head and shoulders, and the kids can even watch TV on the trip!
Glance your eye over the swooning lines, and it isn’t hard to rate this as one of the best automotive designs running the roads. It is a perfect flagship model that displays elegance, sportiness and on-road presence.
Launch yourself forward in a BMW 730d today.
