What’s the best GT car? Yeah, I guess some of you might say a Porsche or maybe even an Aston Martin or at a pinch an FPV or an HSV machine. But which of these cars would really turn on the wife? Practicality aside, I reckon I wouldn’t be too far off the money in saying that a BMW Z4 would do the trick.
Taking a closer look at the lesser powered of the Z4 cars, the sDrive 23i, it is very evident that no sex appeal is lost in the latest Z4 design created on the BMW drawing board. Simply, the BMW Z4 sDrive23i looks brilliant in the metal. Your wife has got to be hooked from the onset with the bulging side skirts, BMW badging on the sides, the long drawn out low-profile bonnet and exceptionally hot looking alloys which all add up to an overall delicate yet raunchy styling package. It certainly looks the part – and I reckon a little more exotic than even the 911 or latest Aston Martin Coupes. And anyway, who wants a four door HSV or FPV on a romantic weekend away?
But does the BMW Z4 sDrive23i go? I mean really go, like a proper roadster should. Under the hood is a very lively 2.5 litre inline six petrol engine. No one in the world makes an inline six quite like BMW, and the smooth power delivery is quite exceptional. The silky surge of engine thrust once the full 250Nm at 2750 rpm is hit is exhilarating. The BMW Z4 sDrive23i is the entry model, but BMW have made doubly sure that they didn’t leave behind the assertive driving appeal that this BMW Z4 sDrive23i has. With a 6.6 second dash from 0-100 km/h, and a top speed of over 240 km/h, the BMW Z4 sDrive23i is as swift as they come. In fact, the BMW Z4 sDrive23i is one of the easiest and most fun roadsters to drive – and this even takes into account the very accomplished Mazda MX-5. What the MX-5 lacks is the BMW Z4 sDrive23i’s exotic appeal and out and out performance.
Show the wife the interior by folding down the electronic hard-top, and she’s sure to appreciate the sculptured sport-leather seats and the funky interior colours trimmed with chrome, and stitched upholstered detailing. And, she’ll never need to read a map again with the optional sat-nav technology. Electronically controlled windows and seats make travelling easy in the Z4. Climate controlled air conditioning will keep the map debates cool, and the hot sounds will make any journey enjoyable. By the way, with the top down there is no better way to travel Australian roads on a hot summer’s day. Wind buffeting with the top down is near zilch, and the sensations of fast acceleration and fresh air combine to make the romantic get away in open top style a heap of fun.
Great feedback via the steering, awesome grip and a nimble chassis enable the driver to confidently push the BMW Z4 sDrive23i very hard if the need arises. The car feels solidly built, and the ride is taut without being too harsh.
The current model series includes the:
- Z4 sDrive23i six-speed manual
- Z4 sDrive23i six-speed automatic
