Under the beautifully sculptured hood lies an engine ready to pounce. Unleash the full force of the V10 engine and the 373 kW, 520 Nm motor responds in a surging instant. The BMW M6 is therefore a pleasure to drive. It can be delightfully docile in congested traffic or shatteringly fast on the open road. Watch out for speed cameras! This one walks along at legal road speeds. Wind up the V10 from a standstill, and 100 clicks comes up in a rapid 4.5 seconds. If the electronic speed limiter at 250 km/h was de-activated, then the car could easily knock over 300 km/h. The BMW M6, in a straight line, certainly feels as quick as any Ferrari might and, although heavier, the brilliant chassis corners hard in blistering fashion. The electrifying engine note, and super-quick seven-speed paddle-shift gearshift, helps the M6 set the pace. Press the “M” button, and those speed paddle-shift times are tightened even further.

Undoubtedly, the shark-like headlights and the teardrop shaped low slung body looks rather intoxicating. The vast number of on-lookers will be impressed as you blitz past on the road. I would say the appreciative looks will outnumber those eyes given to a 911.

Whether you like this sexy body in topless form or in coupe style, the M6 is a very safe motor vehicle to drive. A total of six airbags are fitted as standard. The intelligent safety control system is leading edge and has Advanced Safety Electronics (ASE) which ensures that each bag is inflated to the correct degree to minimise the effects of an impact. The same system also activates the seatbelt tensioners, deactivates the central locking and cuts the fuel pump’s activity in the event of a nasty accident. The tremendous acceleration of the BMW M6 is complemented by its fabulous stopping ability. The high performance braking system boasts perforated, ventilated and especially weight-optimised compound brake discs. These potent brakes are mounted on the broad 19-inch forged wheels that are specially designed for the M6. Night-time driving on twisting roads is a breeze – thanks to the Adaptive Headlights that enhance safety in the BMW M6. The headlights lead the way around the curve via sensors which permanently record the speed and steering angle of the front wheels. Electromechanical motors then convert this data into control signals for the xenon headlights. Pretty cool eh! Perhaps most importantly, a comfortable driving position makes for a safe drive. The seats in the M6 are simply outstanding. The settings for the backrest width and thigh support can be varied – so to can the settings for the seat heating system. The lumbar support is variable, thanks to the air cushion system that can be adjusted to provide optimum support for the back muscles. Of course, favourite seating positions can be individually stored in the seats electronic memory.
