When peering up the no exit road I have that feeling of excitement inside my stomach which suggests that I really must just have a look up this intriguing little road. There is no indication of the road being to harsh, yet it is gravel and does seem to climb up a mountain valley. How many of us have been in this situation but have been put off taking the plunge because of the car that we happen to be driving? Audi’s new A6 Allroad seeks to solve this problem for us.
The classy looking Audi A6 Allroad has all the ability and technology handy to get you out of most sticky situations. A romp up a back road could easily have you meet a ford or small river crossing. Audi have ensured that the A6 Allroad comes with plenty of extra ground clearance to venture that little bit further off the beaten track.
I love to fish, so it was with great pleasure that I could travel with a friend on an overnight weekend trip away – in hunt of a fish or two. My mate’s Audi A6 Allroad impressed me with its effortless cruising capability that was so refined and powerful. Passing manoeuvres and hill-work were accomplished with smooth acceleration and powerful composure. The engine that graces the A6 Allroad is a beauty, and the urgency with which the Allroad could silently glide past 140 km/h when passing big B-trains was very satisfying. Let’ say that the 4.2 litre FSI engine never feels out of puff – and with a 0-100 km/h of just 6.3 seconds you can see why. But don’t just see it on this bit of paper; you really ought to experience the grunt for yourself. The choice of six-gear speeds is standard. What you need to choose is whether you like them coming automatically or whether you like to select them yourself via a six-speed manual gearbox. Audi do have the breathtaking 3.0TDI A6 Allroad as well. The performance of this powerful high tech-diesel V6 power-plant is outstanding, while remaining at the top of its class for fuel economy.
Practical concerns made it necessary that we carry plenty of food and tinnies, ingredients to cook a tender and delicate tasting fresh water fish, gas cooker, a tent, sleeping bags, clothing and, of course, the fishing gear. What impressed me was how the 1680 litres of luggage capacity behind us (with back seats folded down) swallowed everything with ease. What is it with guys on weekends? Why do we always carry more than we actually need!
The massive ten-spoke18-inch rims meant that we were sitting on some pretty serious rubber that rode nicely over the road surface and, as a passenger, the ride comfort was off the top shelf. The Audi’s seats remained comfortable for the whole duration of the journey, which meant that I could hop out of the seats after a couple of hours without any lower back pain from sitting down for too long.
Even as the gravel roads turned into tracks and paddocks, the Audi always felt composed and in control – thanks to the Quattro inspired AWD drive-train. Silent, smooth gear changes and a quiet comfortable cabin make the Audi A6 Allroad incredibly easy to live with.
Equipped with loads of nice premium-end goodies, the Audi A6 Allroad is a great car to own and drive. You always look good in an Audi, regardless of what model of Audi you may drive – and the lines of the big Audi A6 Allroad AWD estate are elegant and sophisticated. The birchwood inlays looked beautiful against the plush interior materials and tailored leather seats. Comfort is a hallmark of Audi. Everything is beautifully crafted, and the electronics work to please its occupants.
Maybe one day I could own one of these gems. Certainly, my mate was onto a good thing! The brilliant new Audi A6 Allroad: awesome!
